  • Look Inside

We investigated the effect of topical instillation of 2% carteolol on the serum lipid levels in 48 eyes of 24 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. The patients were given 2% carteolol twice daily to replace beta-blockers. The serum lipid levels were quantitated every 4 weeks for 16 weeks. After start of instillation of carteolol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol started to rise until the 8th weeks to remain in the pretreatment level. There was no change in the level of total cholesterol throughout. Triglyceride level decreased significantly throughout the 16 weeks. The intraocular pressure showed no changes as compared to the baseline value. The findings show that 2% carteolol does not affect the serum levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol or total cholesterol but that it induces decrease in triglyceride level. It is inferred that topical carteolol can be used in glaucoma patients with hyperlipidemia.
