  • Look Inside

Three persons, aged 16,18 and 22 years each, were given amobarbiturate (5mg/kg) by drip infusion. They had congenital nystagmus with best corrected visual acuity of 0.5 in their better eyes. Following infusion, the visual acuity in their better eyes improved to 0.7 or over. They were instructed to keep their emotional state under self control and underwent repeated visual acuity testing without medication. Thereafter, one passed the visual examination for driving licence and the other two for high school or college entrance. It appeared that the effect of suppressing nystagmus by barbiturate was upon the reticular formation and the hypothalamus since the latter is concerned with the emotional state. The findings show the potential social usefulness of barbiturates for congenital nystagmus, particularly in persons who tend to overstrain themselves.
