We evaluated the morphological features in 32 eyes of branch retinal vein occlusion using an optical coherence tomograph (OCT) . The foveal thickness in 21 eyes within one month after onset averaged 377 ± 192 jim and was negatively correlated with the visual acuity (r = 0.57, p < 0.01) . There were two types of branch retinal vein occlusion in its early stage regarding whether the edema involved only the outer retinal layers or the whole retina. These two types ran different clinical courses. In 11 eyes of branch retinal vein occlusion in its chronic stage, the retinal thickness in the affected sector was decreased as compared with the patient retina or with the nomal eyes. There was no difference in the foveal thickness.
