Purpose:To evaluate the long-term effect of nipradilol on the intraocular pressure(IOP)and retinal circulation in glaucoma patients. Cases and Method:Nipradilol ophthalmic solution was instilled into one eye each of 14 glaucoma patients. The series comprised primary open-angle glaucoma 5 eyes and normal-tension glaucoma 9 eyes. All the patients had received no glaucoma treatment before. Another series of 7 eyes of 7 healthy volunteers served as control. All the patients were assessed as to intraocular pressure(IOP),retinal flow measurements by scanning laser doppler flowmetry, and retinal oxygen saturation level by spectral retinal image system before,1 month and 3 months after start of nipradilol. Results:Instillation of nipradilol induced no significant change in IOP. There was a positive correlation between baseline IOP and induced decrease in IOP(p<0.006). Averaged value of retinal circulation showed a signficant increase after 1 month of nipradilol. There was no significant change in retinal oxygen saturation level throughout. Conclusion:Topical nipradilol improved the retinal circulation. This effect was not a lasting one due, probably,to tolerance to the pharmacological effect.
