We evaluated the effects of impaired blood-aqueous barrier in 50 eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) on the crystalline lens. Lens autofluorescence and aqueous protein concentration served as parameters. The ages of patients averaged 59.9 years. They were free of cataract. The intensity of lens autofluorescence in the 50 eyes was significantly higher than in fellow or control eyes (p<0.05) . The aqueous protein was also elevated in the affected eyes. Intensity of lens autofluorescence was proportional to the range of retinal capillary occlusion and the duration of the disease. The observed increase in lens autofluo-rescence in BRVO seemed to reflect metabolic disorder of lens protein secondary to impaired blood-retinal barrier.
