  • Look Inside

We reviewed 85 eyes of 80 patients who were aged under 19 years and who underwent surgery for retinal detachment in our department during the past 8 years. The series included 52 males and 28 females. The ages ranged from 2 to 19 years, average 16 years. The retinal detachment was caused by or associated with atrophic holes 33 eyes (39%) , ocular trauma 23 eyes (27%), atopic dermatitis 14 eyes (17%), idiopathic oral break 7 eyes (8%) and peripheral flap tears 4 eyes (5%) . No retinal break was detected in the other 4 eyes. Final retinal reattachment was obtained in 95% of eyes. The series included 12 eyes of 10 patients in the age group from 15 to 19 years. Atopic dermatitis appeared to the contributing factor in 18% of these eyes. The findings show the increasing trend of atopic dermatitis as a major contributing factor for retinal detachment in younger persons.
