We reviewed 17 eyes which underwent limbal transplantation for severe chemical corneal burn. Clear cornea was obtained in 11 eyes (65% ) , including 5 eyes which received a single procedure only. These 5 eyes showed a significantly high value of tear function index (p < 0.05) . The tear function index was significantly low in cases which developed persistent epithelial defect (p < 0.01) . Eyes treated by autograft limbal transplantation at the first session resulted in more favorable outcome than those treated by allograft limbal transplantation (p < 0.05) . The outcome of surgery was not related either with the age of patient or the duration after injury. The dynamics of tear fluid was the most important prognostic factor for the surgical outcome.
