We reviewed 228 eyes of retinal artery or vein occlusions during the foregoing 8 years. The series comprised central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) 27 eyes, branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) 19 eyes, central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) 61 eyes and branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) 121 eyes. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy was performed in 38 eyes including CRAO 13 eyes, BRAO 2 eyes, CRVO 12 eyes and BRVO 11 eyes. In retinal artery occlusions, the visual acuity improved in 38% in the treated group and in 18% in the untreated group. In retinal vein occlusions, the visual acuity improved in 59% of eyes immediately after treatment to deteriorate later. The findings show that hyperbaric oxygen therapy was effective for retinal artery occlusions and not for retinal vein occlusions in the present series.
