In Japan, the Ministry of Health has been conducting a surveillance of infectious diseases since 1981.This program includes three entitites of viral conjunctivitis:epidemic keratoconjunctivitis, acute hemorrhagicconjunctivitis, and pharyngoconjunctival fever. Adenoviral conjunctivitis is the most frequent entity of viralconjunctivitis with its peak of onset in August. All adenovirus serotypes have their peak incidence in summerwith the exception of adenovirus type 19, which is most frequent in late autumn and early winter. These seasonalvariations may be due to the high temperature and humidity during summer in Japan, and to biological differencesin serotypes. During the recent epidemic outbreaks of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis due to enterovirus, thehighest incidence was observed in September and October. Herpes simplex conjunctivitis shows a similar tendencyto adenoviral conjunctivitis with its peak in July and August. In contrast to viral conjunctivitis, chlamydialconjunctivitis shows two peaks in its incidence in March and June to August.
