  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We examined ophthalmic solutions used for examinations for possible microbial contamination. A total of 125 samples were collected from 23 eye clinics. Bottlenecks and contents were cultured from each sample. Microorganisms from either or both were detected from 23 samples, 18%. Detection rate was 16% from bottlenecks and 2% from contents. The difference was significant (p<0.01). The incidence of contami-nation was independent of the type of medications or the duration of use. Some clinics showed high rates of contamination. Out of the isolated microorganisms, 30% were gram-positive cocci, half of which were resistant to multiple antibiotics. No fungi or gram-nagative organisms were detected. Due attention is advocated over the contamination of ophthalmic solutions used for examinations because of the potential risk of iatrogenic infections.
