  • Look Inside

We examined the bottle necks and contents of ophthalmic solutions under current use regarding possible microbial contamination. Culture was positive from 47 specimens, 31%, out of 154 bottles used by 45 outpatients. The rate of positive culture was higher from bottle necks at 25% than from the solutions at 10%. The difference was significant (p<0.01). Contamination was most frequent from isotonic saline solution without preservatives at 10 out of 14 samples, 71%. Gram-positive cocci were the most freqeunt microorganism, of which resistance to multiple antibiotics was present in 29%. Proper education of patients is advocated in order to avoid eventual infection from ophthalmic solutions.
