  • Look Inside

We asked 122 visually handicapped persons by telephone concerning the daily lives and the state of utilization of prosthetic appliances and technical aids. Their visual status ranked grade 1 or 2, meaning that the sum of visual acuity in both eyes was 0.04 or less. A total of 90 persons responded to the enquiry. Three quarters of grade 1 and one half of grade 2 persons could not go out alone. Only 12 of 54 grade 1 persons were trained to use white canes and 7 out of the 12 could go out alone. Out of 4 persons who had televised reading aids, only 1 could read newspapers. This small sample suggests that more efforts are needed to encourage the use of such appliances. In order to improve the well-being of visually handicapped persons, a concerted effort is needed by rehabilitation centers as well by medical institutions and local governments.
