We investigated the correlation between peripapillary chorioretinal atrophy (PPA) and central visual field inpairment in 56 glaucomatous eyes. The series comprised 33 eyes with primary open angle glaucoma and 23 eyes with normal tension glaucoma. These eyes had mild to moderate visual field damage with the mean deviation (MD) given by STATPAC of -25 dB or greater. Higher correlation coefficients were present between MD of the central 30° visual field and rim area/disc ratio than PPA/disc ratio. The average of total deviation in the central 10° visual field showed a higher correlation with PPA/disc ratio in the temporal quadrant than the rim area/disc ratio in the same quadrant. The findings show that PPA is positively correlated with central visual field damage. The extent of PPA in glaucoma may serve as a prognostic factor for central visual field impairment.
