  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We tried to detect retinitis pigmentosa (RP) from fundus photographs in subjects who par-ticipated in multiphasic health-check program in Iwate Prefecture. A total of 96,965 persons were tested, an equivalent of 6.8% of the Prefecture. The age ranged from 18 to 86 years, average 53.3 years. A total of 80,571 subjects, 83.1%, belonged to the age range between 40 and 69 years. We identified 62 RP subjects, 28 males and 34 females. The majority belonged to the 7th decade of age. The overall incidence of RP was 0.064% with no sex predilec-tions. The incidence of RP was higher in the coastal area isolated by mountains than in urban or open mountain areas (p<0.05). Multiphasic health-che-ck program was thus useful in the epidemiological survey of retinitis pigmentosa.
