A nation-wide survey was conducted over the present status of pigment degeneration of the retina among the 9,709 attendants of 77 schools for the blind in Japan through in-quiry by mail.

1. Pigment degeneration of the retina was found in 519 out of 9,709 students (5.3%). The incidence agrees well with the hitherto accepted figures.

2. The highest incidence was present in Tokai (Southeast) District at 9% while in Kyushu District the figure was lowest at 2%.
