  • Look Inside

We reviewed 49 cases, 98 eyes, with macular hypoplasia seen during 10 years ending 1987. The ages ranged from 3 to 30 years. The series com-prised macular hypoplasia without other ocular anomaly 50 eyes, albinism 26 eyes and aniridia 22 eyes.

The visual acuity ranged from 0.04 to 0.6. Both eyes tended to have similar visual acuity levels for each case. Visual acuity tended to be lower in aniridia than in other two groups, presumably due to more frequent association of other ocular dis-orders including cataract or glaucoma. Nystagmus was present in all the 49 cases. While binocular vision was poor in most cases, 80% of the cases manifested parallel eye position.

Most eyes showed good responses in electro-retinogram (ERG) and flash visual evoked poten-tial (VEP). Pattern VEP was abnormal in all the cases. There were no differences in the electro-physiological findings among the three groups.

Above findings indicate that macular hypoplasia manifests good to fair macular functions.
