  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We measured the histamine and tryptase levels in conjunctival epithelial cell suspension in children with allergic conjunctivitis and vernal keratocon-junctivitis by applying brush cytology. Both the histamine and tryptase levels were significantly higher in both diseases than controls (p<0.05).The histamine/tryptase ratio was significantly higher in vernal keratoconjunctivitis than in aller-gic conjunctivitis and controls (p<0.05). The ratio was also positively correlated with BUT (r2=0.56) and the presence of superficial punctate keratitis (r2=0.72) . Thus, the histamine/tryptase ratio in the conjunctiva promised to be a useful means in evaluating the ocular surface conditions in allergic and conjunctivitis. That the increase in histamine level was not associated with tryptase in severe vernal conjunctivitis seemed to suggest the impor-tance of inflammatory cells in the conjunctiva in this disease.
