Abstract Purpose:Increased surface scattering observed after implantation of particular intraocular lenses(IOLs)have been suppressed by improving the manufacturing process(AcrySof® Q-code), which was experimentally and clinically confirmed. The IOL was refined for smooth IOL surface. Inheriting suppression of surface scattering was anticipated, but it has not been confirmed yet. This prospective observational study aimed to evaluate surface scattering up to 3 years postoperatively.

Subjects and Methods:Refined IOL SN60WF A-code was implanted in 46 eyes of 45 patients(mean age:72.7 years), and surface scatter, corrected visual acuity, and contrast sensitivity were measured at 1 month, 1, 2, and 3 years after surgery. Surface scattering was evaluated by capturing Scheimpflug image with an EAS-1000, and the densitometry(unit:CCT)of the anterior IOL surface was measured. Photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity were examined using an Optec 6500.

Results:In total, 46, 32, 22, and 16 eyes observed at 1 month, 1, 2, and 3 years postoperatively, respectively. The mean densitometry values were 18.0±3.0, 16.9±2.6, 19.0±2.9, and 20.4±4.5 CCT, respectively, and a significant increase was noted at 3 years compared with 1 month(P=0.017, Dunnett multiple comparison test). No difference was found in corrected visual acuity and contrast sensitivity between 1 month and 3 years.

Conclusions:Surface scatter was well suppressed in the refined IOLs until 3 years postoperatively. The current results were comparable with those of the Q-code IOLs demonstrating that the effect of surface scatter suppression was inherited.
