Abstract Purpose:To report long-term changes in surface scattering after implantation of hydrophobic intraocular lens(IOL)with high water content.

Cases and Method:Eleven patients were implanted with IOL with high water content(SY60WF, Alcon)in one eye and with conventional IOL(SN60WF, Alcon)in the other. Their age ranged from 66 to 82 years, average 72 years. One and five years after surgery, surface scattering of implanted IOL was evaluated by densitometry using Scheimpflug image of central 3 mm area in diameter. Five years after surgery, both eyes were evaluated regarding corrected visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in photopic and mesopic states.

Results:Surface scattering increased 5 years after implantation for both types of IOL. Value of densitometry was significantly smaller for IOL with high water content than for conventional IOL(p<0.05). No differences were present regarding corrected visual acuity or contrast sensitivity between the two types of IOL 5 years after implantation.

Conclusion:Surface scattering was significantly smaller for IOL with high water content than for conventional IOL 5 years after implantation.
