Abstract Purpose:Eye-frail is a condition in which visual function declines with age. In this study, we investigated the status of eye-frail in the elderly.

Methods:A total of 2,140 patients, aged 60 years or older, who initially visited Inouye Eye Hospital and completed the 10 items of the eye-frail self-check were analyzed. The mean frequency of each item were compared by gender and age(60s, 70s, and 80s-90s).

Results:The mean number of checks for men(n=826)was 3.4±2.2, which was significantly lower than that of women(3.8±2.2, n=1,314). The frequency of checks significantly increased with age:3.4±2.1 between 60 and 69 years(n=940);3.8±2.2 between 70 and 79 years(n=841);and 4.2±2.4 between 80 and 99 years(n=359). Individuals age between 60 and 69 years most frequently reported following order:‘get tired easily’(63.6%), ‘could not see well even with glasses’(51.7%), and ‘did not read newspapers or books for a long time’(48.7%). In the 70s, the checks were more frequent in the following order:‘get tired easily’(62.2%), ‘could not see well even with glasses’(58.1%), and ‘did not read newspapers or books for a long time’(57.3%). Individuals aged 80 years and older most frequently reported following order:‘get tired easily’(64.3%), ‘could not see well even with glasses’(64.3%), and ‘do not read newspapers or books for a long time’(62.4%).

Conclusion:Eye-frail checks were more frequent in women, among the elderly, and increased with age. In the elderly, the checked items were similar regardless of age.
