Abstract Objective:To analyze the characteristics and causes of infections after penetrating keratoplasty(PKP).

Methods:We investigated 190 cases and 208 eyes that underwent PKP between April 2011 and March 2016 at Hiroshima University Hospital. We retrospectively reviewed six eyes in six cases of post-PKP infectious keratitis.

Results:The pathogen was fungi in four cases and bacteria in two cases. The mean age at onset in the fugal group and bacterial group were 72.0±8.4(65-83)and 58.0±5.7(54-62), respectively. The period between operation and onset of fugal and bacterial infections were 613±494(237-1,336)and 1,263±240(1,093-1,433)days, respectively. When the graft got infected, steroid eye drops were used in all cases, and antibacterial drug eye drops were used in five cases.

Conclusion:We experienced four cases of fungal keratitis and two cases of bacterial keratitis after PKP. It occurred in a shorter period of time in the fungal group than in the bacterial group, but the infections developed it took at least one year after the surgery except for one case in the fungal group.
