  • Look Inside

We reviewed a consecutive series of 41 eyes which underwent penetrating keratoplasty during a one-year period. The series comprised bullous keratopathy 18 eyes, corneal leukoma 8 eyes, keratoconus 6 eyes, corneal perforation 6 eyes, corneal ulcer 2 eyes and corneal burn 1 eye. The corneal graft became transparent in 35 eyes (85%) . The incidence of graft transparency was 89% in bullous keratopathy, 75% in leukoma, 100% in keratoconus and 67% in corneal perfora-tion. When compared with our previous studies (1993-96), eyes with bullous keratopathy showed improved rate of cure.It was apparentry due to use of preserved sclerocorneal graft, presurgical evaluation of corneal endothelium, more frequent scheduled surgery, shorter duration of surgery and attempts not to tamper with the corneal endothelium. Postsurgical complication included graft rejection 5 eyes, persistent epithelial defect 4 eyes, secondary glaucoma 3 eyes and fungus infection 1 eye. The final corrected visual acuity improved in 35 eyes (85%).
