Abstract Objective:To examine the surgical outcome of canalicular lacerations.

Subjects and Methods:We reviewed 9 patients diagnosed with canalicular laceration who underwent reconstruction surgery at our hospital from April 2012 to December 2019. We examined causes of injury, location, interval between trauma and operation, surgical complications, and surgical outcome, retrospectively. In all cases of canalicular reconstruction, a canalicular tube was inserted.

Results:The causes of injury were sharp trauma in 5 cases and blunt trauma in 4 cases. Upper and lower canalicular lacerations were found in 2 and 6 cases, respectively. Both upper and lower canalicular lacerations were found in 1 case. The intervals between trauma and surgery were, 24 hours after injury in 4 cases, 3 days in 4 cases, and 10 days in 1 case. In 3 cases, eyelids had been sutured previously at other institutes. Reconstruction of the canaliculus and eyelids were possible in all cases. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed in any cases. The tubes were removed 1 week to 3 months after the operation, and the symptoms of lacrimation had improved in all cases at the final visit.

Conclusion:In this study, all canalicular lacerations were successfully treated. Early surgery after trauma may lead to good postoperative outcomes.
