Abstract Purpose:To report the review of acute retinal necrosis(ARN)at Gifu University Hospital.

Methods:We retrospectively examined 24 eyes of 22 patients with ARN who were treated at Gifu University Hospital between 1999 and 2015.

Results:The series comprised 24 eyes of 12 males and 10 females and of 13 right eyes and 11 left eyes. The average age of onset was 59.7 years. The average of the logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution(logMAR)at initial examination was 0.60, and at final examination was 1.21. PCR of the aqueous showed herpes simplex virus type 1(HSV-1)in one eye, HSV type 2(HSV-2)in three eyes, and varicella zoster virus(VZV)in 18 eyes. Surgery was performed in 15 eyes. 10 eyes had surgery because of retinal detachment, while prophylactic vitrectomy surgery was done in 5 eyes. Age, progression to zone 1, retinal detachment, vitrectomy, and optic disc swelling were identified as poor prognosis factors. There was no statistically significance in visual outcome as related to virus types.

Conclusions:Age, progression to zone 1, retinal detachment, vitrectomy, and disc swelling were indicators for poor prognosis factors in this study.
