Abstract. Purpose:To report factors related to causes and prognosis of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. Objects and Method:This study was made on 18 cases of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery by us in the past 13 years. Additionally,we asked 24 institutions on the same topic. Results:In our series of 18 cases, two features were identified as indicative of poor outcome:visual acuity less than hand motion at the time of referral, and detection of virulent microorganisms. A total of 20,964 cataract surgeries had been performed in the 24 institutions during the past 5 years. Endophthalmitis was reported from 8 institutions in 14 cases(0.067%). Nonablation of cilia was a frequent factor. Conclusion:Prompt management is mandatory for endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. Due attention is necessary about late complications.
