Abstract Purpose:To report the status of fixation in the ciliary sulcus of a newly designed intraocular lens(IOL)in cadaver eyes. This IOL has three haptics that can be fixated in the ciliary sulcus without suturing.

Cases and Method:This experiment was made on three types of IOL that has the length of 13.2 mm, 13.5 mm and 13.7 mm respectively. These IOLs were inserted into 7 cadaver eyes simulating the procedure in cataract surgery. Safety of IOL was evaluated by 3 methods:by direct compression of IOL by a hook, by applying pressure to the sclera, and by dropping the eye from a height of 30cm.

Results:The 13.2 mm IOL failed to show sufficient fixation. Both 13.5 mm and 13.7 mm IOLs showed sufficient fixation when force was applied directly or to the sclera. The dropping test showed luxation of one haptics in one out of 3 eyes inserted with 13.5 mm IOL and in 2 out of 3 eyes inserted with 13.7 mm IOL.

Conclusion:Both 13.5 mm and 13.7 mm IOLs showed sufficient fixation by directly or indirectly applied force. Further modification appeared to be needed to improve the state of fixation when dropped from the height of 30cm.
