I followed up a consecutive series of 50 eyes after cataract surgery using phacoemulsification and posterior chamber lens implantation. The intraocular lens was made of silicone (Staar, model 3-B). The posterior chamber lens was implanted out of the bag foldably in 8 eyes and non-foldably in 42. A corrected postoperative visual acuity of 0.5 or more was obtained in 46 eyes (92%).

The state of corneal endothelium was evaluated by specular microscopy after an average of 20.2 months after surgery. The endothelial cell count averaged 2,808 cells/mm2 before surgery and 2,056 cells/mm2 after surgery, showing loss of 26.8%. The endothelial cell loss averaged 23.9% for cases of non-foldable insertion and 41.8%for foldable inser-tion.
