We evaluated the consecutive series of 286 pre-mature infants treated by our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) during the 42 months through June 1988. The series included 156 male and 130 female infants.

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) occurred in 74 cases (25.9%), of which 28 cases (9.8%) reached Stage 3 or more. The extent of retinopathy involved Zone Ⅱ in 47 cases, of which more thanhalf the circumference was involved in 30 cases (63. 8%). Careful ophthalmoscopic follow-up was neces-sary for these cases, as the severity of retinopathy did not correlate exactly with the extent. Plus disease was detected in 10 cases (3.5%). All these cases reached Stage 3 or more and occupied Zone Ⅰ or Ⅱ. The presence of avascular zone extending over 4 disc diameters from the ora serrata at the initial examination was a significant risk factor indicating later progression to Stage 3 or more.
