  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Through a multi-clinical survey in Sapporo City, Hokkaido,we detected 51 cases of conjunctivitis and 53 cases of urethritis of suspected Chlamydial origin. We performed a more detailed etiological diagnosis through isolation, tissue culture, antigen detection and monoclonal fluorescence antibody method in these patients.

Attempts of isolation of Chlamydia trachomatis was positive in 31% (16/51) in conjunctivitis and in 47%(25/53) in urethritis patients. The rate of isolation was higher than antigen detection in con-junctivitis patients. Both were the same in ureth-ritis patients. In 47% of male patients with conjun-ctivitis (15/32), both isolation and antigen detec-tion proved positive. The two tests were both positive in only 11% of female patients (1/9). Etiological diagnosis of chlamydial infection should be done by selecting due method of diagnosis related with the location of suspected infection.
