We evaluated 58 newborn babies with acute conjun-ctivitis by tissue culture to isolate causative organisms, detection of antigen by immunofluorescence with mono-clonal antibody and determination of serum antibody by ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), IFA (indirect fluorescence antibody) and ELFA (enzyme-linked fluorescence assay) methods. A total of 22 cases (38%) were diagnosed as chlamydial conjunctivitis. They were characterized by the following clinical fea-tures. 1. Acute onset after an incubation period of one to two weeks. 2. Profuse eye discharge and congestion. Lack of hyperlacrimation. 3. Severe, bilateral conjun-ctivitis with pseudomembrane formation. 4. Presence of urogenital complaints in parents. 5. Increased titer for antichlamydial IgG in the serum : a value of 0.33 or more by ELISA and 80 folds or more by IFA methods.
