  • Look Inside

We detected sporadic retinal hemorrhages in a female infant 6 days after birth. She was born at full term and weighed 1,998 g at birth. Two weeks later, a massivechoroidal hemorrhage appeared nasal to the disc to be followed by extensive choroidal detachment one week later. All the fundus lesions healed spontaneously 21 months after birth.

The central retinal artery pressure (CAP) was 35/29 mmHg in the affected eye while the choroidal detach-ment was present. The CAP value was elevated to 59/ 44 mmHg after disappearance of choroidal detachment. The CAP values in 8 normal neonatals averaged 61/48 mmHg for the right eye and 64/52 mmHg for the left.As there were no detectable abnormalities in this infant except the abnormally low CAP value, we sur-mised that the choroidal detachment was caused by disturbed blood circulation in the eye secondary to transient stenosis of the ipsilateral internal carotid or ophthalmic artery.
