  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Widespread use of systemic corticosteroid chan-ged the clinical picture of Harada's disease. This is particularly apparent in the lesser frequency of diffuse fundus depigmentation after the initial acute stage has subsided. We reviewed the clinical features of 78 cases with established diagnosis of Harada's disease. These cases included 41 cases (52%) with choroidal depigmentation and 23 (29%) cases without.

With this changing trend in mind, we modified the diagnostic criteria for Harada's disease original-ly proposed in 1978. The new criteria includes : 1) bilateral acute diffuse choroiditis associated with dye leakage from the choroid by fluorescein angio-graphy and 2) presence of two or more extra-ocular symptoms of dysacusis, tinnitus, poliosis, al-opecia, leucoderma and pleocytosis in the cerebros-pinal fluid. According to the new criteria, 81%, of our series with choroidal depigmentation and 62% without choroidal depigmentation satisfied the con-ditions.
