  • Look Inside

A consecutive series of 236 eyes with retinal de-tachment were operated through the conventional surgical approach during a 6-year period ending 1981. Detailed data were obtained in 223 eyes (209 cases). Among them, surgery was unsuccessful in 19 eyes (18 cases). It is speculated that if recent tech-niques of vitreous surgery were applied, reattach-ment of the retina might have been obtained in 10 of these 19 eyes. The unsuccessful cases included secondary retinal detachment where a surgical ap-proach was contraindicated, two patients with se-vere choroidal detachment, a case where surgery could not be carried out because of the patient's poor general condition and two cases of spontaneous reattachment a year after the last surgery.
