We evaluated the eye position in 45 cases following scleral buckling surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment during a 13-month period. Preoperatively, the eyes were orthophoric in 28, exophoric in 8, exotropic in 7, and hypero-exotropic in 2 cases. Changes in primary or secondary eye position were pre-sent in 51% of cases 1 month after surgery and in 24% 6 months after surgery. Diplopia in the primary posi-tion was present in 5 cases 1 month after surgery. It disappeared in all the cases 6 months after surgery There was a tendency for better eye position in cases with fair postoperative binocular function and visual acu-ity than those without. Cases with preoperative strabismus showed higher rates in the incidence and persis-tence of abnormal eye position. Most of these cases were free of diplopia.
