  • Look Inside

We observed bilateral hypoplasia of the optic nerve head in a 20-year-old subject with severe mental retardation. The optic disc was strikingly small and was accompanied by congenital vascu-lar sheathing. Fluorescein fundus angiography showed a significant delay of blood inflow into some branches of the central retinal artery. The electroretinogram showed normal response. A study of visually evoked potential showed absence of cortical response to visual stimulation. X-ray studies suggested normal size of optic foramen. The ophthalmic artery appeared to be bilaterally narrow or hypoplastic by cerebral angiography.
