  • Look Inside

A 8-year-old male child developed complete visual loss in his left eye following blunt head injury in traffic accident. When seen by us 4 days after the injury, the site of optic disc appeared as an excavated depression of 3 disc diameter across. Blood clot filled the retracted fossa. Retinal vessels were extremely narrow and manifested sludge phenomenon. Fluores-cein angiography showed absence of retinal circula-tion.

Effective retinal circulation was reestablished 7 days after injury. Curled vessels were observed along the margin of the retracted fossa at the site of the disc.

We diagnosed this case as complete avulsion of the optic nerve. Even though the optic nerve was comple-tely severed, the central retinal artery and the vein were apparently spared from permanent damage.
