  • Abstract

New materials for spectacle lenses have be-come available in recent years as allyl resins or metacryi resins. As a possible drawback for these new lens materials, it has been argued thay are more prone to scratches than glass through everyday use.

Artificial scratches have been produced in spectacle lenses made of plastic materials to assess their effects upon optical characteristics and possible subjective nuisances. Allyl resins well withstood attempts at scratching to such a degree as to warrant their widespread use for spectacle lenses. Metacryl resins, on the other hand, was less stable than allyl resins.
