Abstract. Background:Superior segmental optic nerve hypoplasia(SSOH)is a congenital disorder. It is characterized by retinal nerve fiber deficiency in the superior fundus and visual field defect in the inferior sector. Purpose:To report 4 cases of SSOH who showed thinning of inner retinal layer in the posterior fundus. Cases:The 4 cases showed characteristic funduscopic findings of SSOH and corresponding visual field defect. All were unilaterally affected. They were aged 54, 59, 62 and 63 years respectively. Three cases were suspected of glaucoma. Corrected visual acuity in the affected eye was 1.2 in all the 4 cases. Optical coherence tomograph showed thinning of inner retinal layer in the posterior fundus. Conclusion:Attenuation of inner retinal layer was present in the posterior fundus in 4 cases of SSOH. This finding suggests that SSOH may involve a wider area of the fundus than currently assumed.
