Abstract. Purpose:To report the effect and safety of 0.1% brimonidine for glaucoma. Cases and Method:This study was made on 53 eyes of 30 cases treated by brimonidine during a 3-month period. The series comprised 10 males and 20 females. The age averaged 78 years. Brimonidine was added to prostaglandin in 21 eyes. It was switched from brinzolamide in 32 eyes. Results:Intraocular pressure(IOP)averaged 12.4±3.4 mmHg initially and 10.2±2.4 mmHg 4 weeks after addition to prostaglandin. The difference was significant(p=0.00005). IOP averaged 15.9±3.1 mmHg initially and 13.4±2.8 mmHg 4 weeks after switching from brinzolamide. The difference was significant(p=0.00002). There was no change in conjunctival hyperemia, itchiness, or superficial punctate keratitis during use of brimonidine. Systolic blood pressure decreased significantly(p=0.04). Allergic conjunctivitis and blepharitis developed in 5 eyes each. Conclusion:Brimonidine ophthalmic solution was followed by significant IOP decrease after 4 weeks. Topical and systemic side effects need further study.
