Abstract. We evaluated the hematological features in 87 cases of retinal vein occlusion. The series comprised central retinal vein occlusion 52 cases and branch occlusion 35 cases. Retinal vein occlusion was ischemic in 46 cases and nonischemic in 41 cases. The age of patients ranged from 42 to 91 years, average 67 years. There was no difference in the hematological findings between central and branch vein occlusion nor between ischemic and nonischemic occlusion. Out of 41 cases of initially nonischemic occlusion,13 cases became ischemic during the course of the disease. AntithrombinIIIlevel was significantly lower in these 13 cases than the other 28 cases. The course of retinal vein occlusion may be influenced by changes in the blood state associated with coagulability.
