Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of visual acuity one year after photodynamic therapy(PDT)for age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 108 eyes of 104 cases who received PDT for AMD. The series comprised 79 male and 29 female eyes. The age ranged from 51 to 90 years, average 75 years. Visual acuity was less than 0.1 in 33 eyes, between 0.1 and 0.5 in 60 eyes, and over 0.5 in 15 eyes. Polypoid choroidal vasculopathy(PCV)was present in 37 eyes. Visual acuity was evaluated as logMAR 12 months after PDT. Results:PDT was repeated at an average of 2.37 sessions. Visual acuity improved by 0.2 or over in 34 eyes, remained unchanged in 46 eyes, and deteriorated in 28 eyes. Visual outcome was independent of age or presence of PCV. Visual acuity improved significantly in females(p=0.01),younger persons(p=0.03),and in eyes without serous detachment(p=0.04). Conclusion:PDT was effective for AMD one year after treatment. Serous macular detachment was one of the risk factors.
