We performed LASEK refractive surgery on 14 eyes. Epithelial flap was made using 5% saline in 7 eyes and 20% ethanol in 7 eyes. There was no intraoperative complication in either group. During 3 months after surgery, there was no difference between the two groups regarding:pain, corneal infiltration, visual acuity with or without correction, refractive error, regression, corneal thickness,or haze. Corneal epithelialization completed after 2.7±0.5 days in saline group and 3.9±0.7 days in ethanol group. The difference was significant(p=0.0038). There was no difference between the two groups regarding the time needed for creation of epithelial flap. Use of 5% saline appears to be useful due to faster wound healing and lesser corneal dehydration than 20% ethanol.
