Abstract. Purpose:To report the long-term visual outcome of photodynamic therapy(PDT)for age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 35 eyes of 35 cases who received PDT for AMD during a 17-month period. The series comprised 24 males and 11 females. The age ranged from 50 to 90 years, average 75 years. They were followed up for one to 5 years, average 3.8 years. Visual acuity was evaluated in terms of logMAR. Results:Visual acuity improved in 13 eyes(37%), remained unchanged in 15 eyes(43%), and deteriorated in 7 eyes(20%)one year after PDT. It improved in 8 eyes(31%), remained unchanged in 11 eyes(42%), and deteriorated in 7 eyes(27%)three years after PDT. It improved in 3 eyes(15%), remained unchanged in 10 eyes(50%), and deteriorated in 7 eyes(35%)five years after PDT. Conclusion:Visual acuity improved or was maintained in 65% of eyes five years after PDT for AMD. The beneficial effect decreased after one, three and five years in descending order.
