Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of subconjunctival injection of triamcinolone acetonide(TA)for nonnecrotizing anterior scleritis. Cases and Method:This study was made on 11 eyes of 9 cases with anterior scleritis. All the cases had failed to respond to topical or systemic corticosteroid. Rheumatoid arthritis was present in 2 cases. Recurrent osteomalacia was present in one case. Each eye received injection of TA at the dosis of 2 to 4 mg. Treatment was repeated 2 to 4 weeks later when no improvement set in. Cases were followed up for 4 months after treatment. Results:Scleritis subsided in all the 11 eyes. Two eyes needed additional treatment in the same manner. Total amount of TA averaged 5.3±2.2 mg before cure set in. Scleritis relapsed in 3 eyes but subsided after same regimen. Scleral thinning developed in 4 eyes. There was no case of elevated intraocular pressure or manifest progression of cataract throughout the series. Conclusion:Subconjunctival injection of TA was safe and effective for nonnecrotizing anterior scleritis. Precaution is needed regarding still unknown long-term complications.
