Abstract. Purpose:To compare the daily cost of beta-blocking ophthalmic solutions for glaucoma between brand and generic products. Method:A total of 28 products were evaluated that comprised 2% carteolol hydrochloride,0.5% timolol maleate,0.5% betaxolol hydrochloride, and 0.25% nipradilol. Daily cost was calculated from the standard daily dosage and official price list for each product. Results:Daily cost for the 28 products ranged from 11.9 to 107.8 yen, average 44.0 yen. The ratio of daily cost between brand and generic products was 0.55 to 0.95 for carteolol,0.23 to 0.44 for timolol,0.68 to 0.71 for betaxolol, and 0.69 to 1.02 for nipradilol. Conclusion:Daily cost of beta-blocking ophthalmic solution is remarkably lower by using generic than brand products. Exceptions are present for this finding.
