Abstract. Purpose:To report removal of retained hydrogel scleral buckle by water jet and suction. Case:A 66-year-old male had received retinal detachment surgery 10 years before. He developed foreign body sensation and downward deviation of the operated eye since 5 months before. Findings:The right eye showed exposed buckling material made of MIRAgel®. It became fragmented during attempted removal with the use of forceps. It could be removed by applying water jet and suction from the handpiece of phacoemulsification-aspiration instrument. There was no hemorrhage nor damage to surrounding tissue throughout. Postoperatively, magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed a piece of buckling material posterior to the equator. Conclusion:Retained buckling material could be removed by applying water jet and suction. MRI was useful in detecting buckling material that remained after surgery.
