Abstract. Purpose:To report two cases of retraction syndrome secondary to extraocular myositis. Cases:A 55-year-old female presented with diplopia and headache since one month before. Her right eye showed obviously restricted adduction with retraction and narrowing of palpebral fissure on attempted adduction. Computed tomography(CT)showed thickening of lateral rectus muscle, leading to the diagnosis of orbital myositis. Another 77-year-old female presented with blurring of vision and feeling of pressure on lateral gaze since 3 months before. Her right eye showed limitation in abduction and adduction with eyeglobe retraction and narrowing of palpebral fissure on attempted lateral gaze. CT showed thickened medial rectus muscle of her right eye, leading to the diagnosis of myositis. It took 2 years of systemic corticosteroid treatment before improvement of clinical manifestations. Conclusion:These cases illustrate that retraction syndrome may be due to extraocular myositis.
