Abstract. Purpose:To evaluate the possibility to detect superior segmental optic hypoplasia by means of fundus photography alone. Cases and Method:This study was made on 5 eyes of 4 patients who were diagnosed with superior segmental optic hypoplasia. They were aged from 19 to 22, average 21 years. By definition, superior segmental optic hypoplasia showed wedge-shaped visual field defect in the inferior quadrant, thinnig of retinal nerve fiber layer and narrow rim of optic disc. Another series of normal 34 eyes of 17 persons served as control. Seven glaucoma specialists were asked to identify superior segmental optic hypoplasia out of randomly arranged fundus photographs of 5 affected and 34 control eyes. Results:Fundus photographs had a sensitivity of 57%, specificity of 98% for the identification of superior segmental optic hypoplasia. Conclusion:It is difficult to identify superior segmental optic hypoplasia from fundus photographs alone.
