Abstract. Purpose:To review cases who developed ocular infection after implant surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 18 eyes of 18 patients who received detachment surgery and who underwent removal of implant material for ocular infection during the past 5 years. Results:Cases in the present series were aged from 25 to 76 years, average 19 years. Duration between the initial surgery and removal of implant material ranged from 6 months to 20 years, average 8.11 years. Twelve out of 18 cases had received multiple surgeries for retinal detachment. Culture from the conjunctival sac and implant material showed bacteria in 8 cases and fungus in one. All the cases were cured after removal of implant material. Conclusion:There is a higher risk of late ocular infection after multiple surgeries for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.
