Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of scleral buckling for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Cases:This retrospective study was made on 174 eyes of 171 patients who received scleral buckling for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment during 5 years through 2005. The series comprised 103 males and 71 females. Their age ranged from 13 to 96 years, average 52 years. All the cases received lamellar scleral excision, diathermy, and scleral buckling using a silicone tire. Subretinal fluid was drained in 162 eyes. Scleral encircling was performed in 146 eyes. Intravitreal air injection was performed din 62 eyes. Results:The retina became reattached in 152 eyes(88%)after the first surgery and in 167 eyes(96%)after repeated surgeries. Conclusion:Scleral buckling induces a high rate of retinal reattachment. Other surgical methods would merit due consideration regarding complications and final visual function.
